The 40 Yard Dash... Like Riding a Bike???

A funny thing happened the other day. Jon Corto who was the "Combine Freak" in my new DVD had a workout with the New York Giants on Tuesday. He and two other safeties were brought in to get a look. Surprisingly Giants Head Coach, Tom Coughlin conducted the workout.

Jon said they put him through 45 min. of positional drills then out of the blue Coughlin said, "get on the line to run a 40 so we can see how fast you are". Now Jon has not run a 40 yard dash since last March when he lit up the Syracuse Pro Day. So he was taken off guard and said he panicked for a second and scramble to focus on the proper technique. The other two players at the workout were even more stressed, as on was a 13 year vet who has not had to run a forty yard dash in a long, long time.

The panic for Jon did not last long. he got his head into it worked through a couple of starts then hit a decent 40 yard dash in the high 4.5's. He said that all the training with me, ingrained the technique cues into his memory, and he said when he is 50 years old he will still remember my 40 yard dash technique.

Jon told me later it is was "just like riding a bike" executing a close to perfect 40 yard dash.

If you want to learn these powerful 40 yard dash technique cues that will soak into your brain and allow you to run a great time, get the Combine Freak DVD .

How to Run a Faster 40 Yard Dash at Football Combines

How to Run a Faster 40 Yard Dash

The 40 yard dash has become the gold standard of football tests and can make or break an athlete’s football career. It is one of the most popular tests performed each year at the NFL Combine.

Many football players are looking for ways to improve their 40 yard dash time prior to attending football combines. By improving specific technique aspects and performing the proper training, 40 yard dash times can be greatly lowered.

Technique for the 40 Yard Dash

By refining the specific technique for the 40 yard dash, times can be greatly improved. Technique cues such as starting stance, first step length, countermovement, arm action, and breathing are some of the key factors in improving the 40 yard dash.

The starting stance of the 40 yard dash is extremely important as it is the foundation for a great time in the 40 yard dash. Each athlete should try to limit countermovement off the start as the timers go on first movement, so if there is countermovement valuable time is given to the timers.

After the start the first step is vital to get an explosive start to the 40 yard dash. The step must be the right length and the right angle for a great start.

One of the most important techniques cues for the 40 yard dash is the breathing technique that is used. A specific breathing pattern will ensure the athlete does not tighten up leading to a great time and technique.

The more technique flaws that can be corrected the more efficient the athlete will run.

Training for the 40 Yard Dash

The other aspect for improving the 40 yard dash is using training methods to increase speed, acceleration, power and flexibility.

Speed and ultimately acceleration training are key methods to enhance a 40 yard dash result. Speed training emphasizing on forward body lean, stride frequency and stride length will improve times.

Flexibility is one of the most over looked aspects of 40 yard dash enhancement. By increasing flexibility in the hips, legs and upper body speed will be enhanced.

By focusing on both the technique and training aspects of the 40 yard dash, a great time can be achieved. The athlete must become a student of the 40 yard dash learning and practicing perfection.

40 yard dash Frustrations

Do you know what is bothering me?

I can't stand when people get in the way of an athlete's success. It absolutely irritates me when people make decisions and use power to further themselves and not the athlete. Here is why I feel this way.

Recently, I was asked to work with a top prospect up in my homeland of Canada. This athlete is a physical freak and I believe has the ability to play in the NFL.

Upon me contacting him he explained that they had a program at his school, and that his coach said that he had to follow that program in preparation for his testing day with scouts. I asked him if I could view the program, which I did. Let me preface this by saying that I respect other professionals and know that we all have our own way, and that in most cases we all get results. So if this program he was about to show me was beneficial to him then I would not have any problem with him following there program.

The athlete scanned the program's several pages and sent it to me. What I saw was a program that was fit for a Pop Warner team, basic weight training exercises, no speed, no core, no specific combine prep, no plyometrics, no flexibility, no agility or movement training... I was speechless. I though I would at least e-mail the caoch to see if I could educate him on what this athlete needed to be doing. In my polite and well written e-mail I expressed interest in helping the athlete prepare for the Combine. His response was..."they are part of the team... the team has a weight lifting program that is manadtory... I built the foundation here and it represent what we do here." In his e-mail he also stated that his program was combine specific... You get the picture.

So here we have a talented athlete with a bright future that is being held down by a coach that is holding his power, and putting his ego in front of this athlete's future. That is what bothers me... Actually it irritates me.

I wish I could slip the athlete a copy of The Combine Freak
(http://www.blogger.com/www.combinefreak.com) for him to watch in private. To at least be on the same level as the athletes that have prepared for the combine tests, athletes that know the specific technique for each test.

This coach would benefit much more by the athlete training properly, testing at the top, making the NFL and thus furthering the perception of this coach's football program. Now that would be logical...

So here is just a one of story of an athlete being held back by his coach... I am sure there are many more.

Don't let it happen to you.

In case you have been under a rock the past 5 days, I launched my new combine training DVD "The Combine Freak" (http://www.combinefreak.com) Check it out! http://www.combinefreak.com

How to Stretch for the 40 yard dash

Although I have covered this topic in past newsletters, I am getting countless e-mail about how and when to stretch.

The Journal of Strengh & Conditioning Research this month had many studies examining the use of static stretching versus dynamic stretching.

More benefits were shown with a Dynamic flexiblity routine over static streching. Studies also showed that vertcial power was increased with dynamic stretching prior to a vertical jump, than with static streching.

So make sure to perform dynamic stretching just like my Dynamic Stretching protocol found in Mastering the 40 Yard Dash (www.Masteringthe40YardDash.com)

NFL Combine Training Technique

If you are one of those athletes out there that think there is not much science to performing the combine tests and think you can head out there and just wing it, you are selling yourself short.

With that being said I had an very inspiring e-mail yesterday from one of my client's parents who attended a high school Addidas Combine. Here goes:

Hi Mike,
Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how matt did. Amazingly, he increased his vertical by 7 inches since the last camp due to your new technique. He had a 35inch vertical, benched 12 reps at 185, did the shuttle in 4.2 and the 40 in 4.6. This was the electronic sensor start and sensor stop so the times were running slower than they would have normally been, as you said. His shuttle was fabulous.

At least 6 college coaches from the camp complimented him and commented that he had the best shuttle technique they had seen at ANY of the high school combine camps. If he doesn't have THE fastest shuttle time out of the 300 kids that were invited to this camp, it'll definitely be in the top 5. Thank you sooooo much. I was already getting about 2 dozen coaches asking me where he wants to go to college, where he's from, GPA, SAT score, etc......Matt's so determined to play college football and your help has been invaluable. We'll keep you up to date as to how he does at the Nike Recruiting camp on May 20th. Again thank you and have a great day!
Ms. K

So there you go. All this in two hours teaching young Matt some of the technique instruction that is in my Pro Combine Preparation Manual. Imagine what you can do with having this resource in your hands to constantly refer to.

Do You Have Heart?

Yesterday I wrote an e-mail on "the fastest route to success". This email recieved alot of positive feedback.

I wrote that e-mail because I have noo time whatsoever for those that don't what to be the best they can be.

See when I take on a new client, they have to want it, becasue if they don't than really what is the point? I can try to push them, motivate them, but if the effort is not there than the are wasting my time and their time.

See you have to commit yourself to wanting it. Paying the price of success. Everyday my goal is to make my athletes better than they were yesterday.

Do you think it is easy? We both know that it is tough to train and prepare, to extract every ounce of potential out of your body.

But that right there is the difference between success and failure, making the team and being cut, achiveing your goals. It takes heart.

Heart I can't teach you or give you. Some of us have it, other wil not. Some of us have it and have not been pushed to the point of finding it. What about you?

My Secrets of Combine Training Manual I released last week has opened alot of eyes thus far. It does not only enhance your combine performance, increases your athletic ability, it teaches you what hard work really is. It is demanding no dubt about that. But when you have completed the 8 week program, you will feel like you have never felt before.

See what the buzz is all about.

Preparation Is Vital

Had some great news today, as one on my clients got signed with the Miami Dolphins. It had been hard for him so far this year, being the last cut by the Dolphins in training camp, then not knowing what would take place in the uncertain world of the NFL.

One thing I stressed to him was preparation. No doubt it was hard for him to stay motivated and keep the desire burning inside. He kept himslef physically prepared, training, lifting, running, catching when he did not know if or when the call would come.

The same things goes when preparing for a combine or tryout. You may find out in two days that some team is holding a tryout camp, or there is a NFL scout testing some players in your area. If you are serious about playing at the next level, you have to be prepared all the time.
The time to prepare is NOW. You will never know when the call will come.

Weight gain is god or bad for the 40 yard dash?

I often get athletes that come to me looking to get bigger, with no mention of maintaining or enhancing their speed. Recently I picked up a ten pound plate and asked an athlete how fast he could run with the plater strapped to his back? He laughed but in all honesty when athletes try to bulk up, their speed, more specifically their acceleration, usually suffers.

So what can be done?

Well gradual lean muscle weight gain is suggested as opposed to rapid weight gain. This allows the body to adjust to the weight gain and maintain their speed. Rapid weight gain slows the body down, decreases flexibility, and ultimately inhibits the fluid movement patterns of the athlete.
So next time you are addicted to gaining muscle, think to yourself that you are an athlete, you need to build athleticism first as muscle is slowly added to the body. You need to Stretch to make sure that the muslces can move through a full range of motion. A balanced body of speed and lean muscle is what we are after. Both size and speed can be achieved, it just takes time to do it right.

Remember building a solid foundation takes time, hard work and dedication.
If you are looking how to develop speed, look no further than "Mastering the 40 Yard Dash" manual which has a knockout 30 day speed training program that will give you that drive and acceleration you have been longing for.

45 Degrees to Speed

45 degrees to speed you ask? He must be crazy! When speed training the angle of your body plays an important part in you running a 4.4 sec. 40 yard dash or a 5.2 sec. 40 yard dash.
With a proper forward body lean you are able to achieve a power triple extension of the ankle, knee and hip joint aloowing you to explode with each stride and accelerate explosively. Sounds good doesn't it?

45 degrees is what it is all about. Now go try it.

For drills to enhance your forward body lean, accelerate on over to http://www.procombinetraining.com/h/m2/default.asp?lang=&nCategory=421

Time is ticking. for you to improve your 40 yard dash.

HOW TO START PREPARING YOURSELF FOR THE NFL COMBINE TRAINING

HOW TO START PREPARING YOURSELF FOR THE NFL COMBINE NOW!
It's the middle of the season. Yes you should be focused on finishing the season off and maximizing your on-field performance, but you should also be taking steps to getting things prepred for right after the last college game. Here is a list of 5 things that you can be doing now to help you prepare you and your body for the NFL.

1. Stretching - I know that the majority of athletes hate to stretch. They think that it's a waste of time or can't find time out of their busy schedule to do so. Stretching is a key component to Combine training and preparation. It's so important that here at PCT we have teamed up with renowned stretching specialist Dr. Taras Kochno, who is the personal streching specialist to the likes of Issac Bruce, Donte Stallworth, and Aeneas Williams. By starting to seriously stretch daily not only will your on-field performance improve for the remainder of the season, you will have started breaking down a big limiting factor for speed and power development, something we need to enhance to perform well at the NFL Combine.

2. Anaerobic Conditioning - The harder you can push yourself during in-season conditioning workouts the better your recovery will be when you arrive to train. Often athletes arrive here at PCT deconditioned after a long season, we spend the first week enhancing their anaerobic conditioning and enhancing recovery. Once the athlete is highly conditioned, the athlete can make the most out of speed and agility sessions because the athlete will be fully recovered from each exercise and drill.

3. Nutrition & Hydration - Believe it or not, what you eat now will play a role in what you will have to overcome in January. Excess body fat limits speed improvement. A lean healthy nutritional plan now will maximize performance come the NFL Combine. Water is the drink of choice, hydrated muscles will recover fast and perform to their potential.

4. Train the Core - Core Strength is the key to speed and power. Start targeting core strength and stability now. The abdominals, low back, obliques, and glutes are the target muscles groups. Training them now will only enhance training in January!

5. Rehab and Prehab - If you are injured now get the proper treatment to ensure that you will be ready come January. You can prevent injury by following the above guidelines which will help you recover and maximize performance.
